When you need to refuse new job offers

Initial communication with the employer looks unprofessional

If communications and contacts with the company where you are interviewing are scarce, if the situation is disrespectful, unprofessional, or there is simply no normal contact, this is a serious warning. If your potential boss is too busy to give you adequate information about the position or to answer some urgent questions, who knows what else he will not give a damn about.
Meeting with the manager leaves a negative impression

Pay attention to tone and atmosphere. When you first meet with a potential leader and other employees of the company, try to feel their personalities, styles, approaches. If you don’t think that you will feel at home in the company or that you cannot develop a healthy, positive relationship with your boss, consider this a sign that work may very well not be for you.

The conditions of the final offer are far from what was described at the beginning when advertising the position

The salary is less than you expected - this is quite common. Although it’s not easy with money right now, you can never agree to a position that offers significantly less than you might like. If you are sure (after the necessary competitive and market analysis) that you can demand significantly more for your skills and experience, do not be afraid to push. In practice, a certain bargaining is often appropriate, especially at higher positions. However, if the offer is significantly different from what you were originally told, this is a serious negative signal about the employer.
Actual responsibilities differ from the original description.

When you receive a formal job offer, most often it indicates the name of the position and the immediate supervisor. If both of them meet your expectations and you talked to this particular manager, most likely, everything is in order. If something else sounds there, you should find out more to understand the real responsibilities and hierarchy in the organization. Do not leave anything to chance. Ask, for example, what are your day-to-day responsibilities or “what does the most successful [carrier of this position] in your company do.” If you expect to manage people, and the real responsibilities seem to be to fasten documents and fax them, you need to figure it out.
Work will not play into your hands in the long run

If the position you are interviewing seems like a dead end, it is very likely that it is. One of the most important things to understand when you are offered a job is where it will lead you in the future. Will it provide you with invaluable connections and knowledge that will help you move further in the future? What can this position turn into? What new skills do you learn?

Step back and appreciate the big picture: how will this work not only enhance your career opportunities, but also benefit your life in the long term? You need to seriously think about your career and clearly see what the job will lead to in a year, three years, five years. Do not waste time on a position that will not bring you growth, will not expand your life in some aspects. Your time, energy and effort are too valuable for this.

In the end, if you fully understood the proposal and it seems to you that the described signals are viewed in it, it is very likely that you should immediately refuse - and this is much simpler than it seems. Just be sincere, concise, and respectful. Thank you for the offer, briefly and simply explain the refusal, and leave your negative opinions to yourself. And do not forget to stay in touch with the employer (if the rejection is accepted professionally and humanely) - you never know, suddenly something will change, and this company will become a more positive chance for you in the future.

It can be added that people are often in a hurry to abandon "horizontal" growth - a proposal that does not imply promotion. Their ego shouts: “I already did this! This is not large enough for me! ”But in fact, such steps can be positive if they help you grow and develop in the desired direction. Do not reject such work right away - it can be a good springboard for what you ultimately dream of. Carefully explore such opportunities and make decisions deliberately and carefully.
